I appreciated that she didn't make excuses, she knows she screwed up and made peace with it long ago. She very easily could have divorced and remained friendly towards her family, but as she put it, she didn't want to fake it, she wasn't going to be ready to be a mother and never wanted to give the impression she would ever be one to her children. It's a short-sighted, selfish reason that doesn't take into account what that sudden abandonment would do to a family, but it's a very human mistake she regretted. I like that it's such a simple answer, it seems so mundane and trivial but spoke a lot about her character and her perceptions of the world and life.
